Concerns over commercial growth In 2004, The Guardian reported that Halloween was worth £100m to UK retailers, representing the third largest commercial event of the year after Christmas and Easter. This campaign is asking society to consider what type of festival we want this to become. In the USA the festival is massive with 34 million people celebrating it.
The UK Halloween market is expected to follow as more and more retailers stock more and more Halloween-associated products to "meet customer demand". Our concern is not with the fact that people are making money out of the event, as clearly the celebration has a positive impact on the UK economy, but with the type of products being stocked and the emphasis on goods designed to scare and shock. Not everyone want to see children dresses as monsters and murderers.
